Introduction to Egg Tempera
Three week course in beginning egg tempera technique
Two sections offered in August:
Section 1: Saturday Afternoon 2 – 4 pm, August 11th to August 25th, 2018
Learn the basics of egg tempera painting, including paint formulation and brush techniques.
Class is designed for all levels of artistic experience.

This course is a prerequisite for Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Iconography, and
Intermediate and Advanced Egg Tempera classes to be offered at Agitator Gallery.

Syllabus – Introduction to Egg Tempera Painting
Class Description
This introductory class focuses on exercises designed to familiarize the student with a temperamental medium. Students will learn to grind their own egg tempera paints and to master the basic techniques of egg tempera painting.
The three week workshop is a perquisite for Beginning Egg tempera Painting and Beginning Icon Painting. Workshop is limited to 8 students.
Cost
$100 for class
$65 for materials (purchase when registering for the class)
Materials
Students can provide their own materials, or purchase a set of materials on the first day of class. Students must indicate when registering if they will be purchasing materials through the class.
Materials List
Sealable cylinder containers (for storing your paints)
safety mask,
latex/rubber gloves
brushes
small bottle of vinegar or distilled water (vinegar is recommended)
eggs
pigments
palette
bowl
small pitcher
mortar and pestle (recommended but optional)
three small gessoed wood panels (Dick Blick’s 5 x7 gessoed artist panels
Class Outline
Week 1: learning and becoming familiar with the medium
separating egg yolk from egg white
working with pigments and grinding paints
peti lac painting technique.
Week 2: painting with egg tempera
evaluating and practicing peti lac technique
first layers of painting outline to first highlights
the nourishing layer, and egg tempera’s play with light
Week 3: modeling and putting it all together
modeling: lowlights, highlights, and final highlights
putting it all together, from outline to final highlights
